Patch the appliance first

People still start their Saturday updates on laptops. Start on the boxes that face the internet.

Firewall, VPN, and any device with a public address get the vendor fix first. Those are what attackers scan for at 2 a.m. Your word processor can wait until Monday.

If you do not know how to apply the update, you are not failing. You hired the wrong kind of help, or you have not hired any. Call someone who has done it on that brand of box. Watch them once. Then you can do the next one.
