What still works when the internet stops?
An internet outage and a power outage are different problems. A smart device may still have power while its app, remote access, or cloud features stop responding. Work out which controls remain available before you need them.
Start with the manufacturer’s instructions for each device you depend on. Find the local controls for heating, lights, and entry. Check whether schedules continue without internet and whether recordings stay local or require a cloud connection. Do not assume every device from the same brand behaves the same way.
Write a short household guide with the model names, manual controls, and support contacts. Make sure another adult can find and understand it. Keep any physical backup keys secure and accessible to the people who need them.
For alarms, medical equipment, monitored security, and other safety-critical systems, arrange any testing with the provider. Do not disconnect them to experiment. A useful smart home should have a plan for an ordinary service interruption, not just a convenient app when everything is working.
